Hourly Paycheck Calculator Guide
How to Calculate an Hourly Paycheck
Multiply paid regular hours by the base hourly rate, add separately classified overtime and double-time earnings, and subtract employee withholding and deductions. The rate alone does not tell you the amount deposited.
Calculate hours worked from actual records. This interface uses one repeating workweek and converts it to the selected pay frequency. Regular, overtime and double-time hours are separate buckets; do not count an hour in two buckets.
Gross hourly pay equals rate × regular hours. Overtime uses 1.5× and double time uses 2× in the simple form. Those multipliers do not establish legal eligibility. For unequal weeks, shifts crossing midnight or custom premiums, use Overtime Calculator’s Time Card workflow.
The complete gross amount, including double time, passes to the shared paycheck engine. Federal withholding uses your filing status and current W-4 settings. Separate prior Social Security and Medicare wage inputs apply current-paycheck caps. State coverage is shown with the results.
Hourly Paycheck Example
At $30 per hour, 40 regular hours produce $1,200. Five overtime hours at $45 produce $225. Two double-time hours at $60 add $120. Gross earnings for this illustrative week are $1,545 before withholding and deductions.
Two identical weeks produce $3,090 gross biweekly. If the weeks differ, classify overtime per workweek, then choose This pay period and enter the combined hours. A semimonthly equivalent uses 52 ÷ 24 weeks, which is a planning conversion rather than actual time-card hours.
Gross Hourly Pay vs Take-Home Pay
The quoted wage is usually gross. Take-home pay subtracts employee taxes and deductions from earnings. Retirement contributions, benefit premiums and withholding elections can make two employees with the same rate receive different deposits.
An effective net hourly figure divides net pay by paid hours, but it is not a replacement for the contractual wage. Benefits and employer taxes are separate from that cash figure.
How Breaks and Unpaid Time Affect Pay
Exclude legitimately unpaid time from paid hours. Do not subtract a paid break. When whether a break should be paid is disputed, use the applicable rules and employer records rather than asking this calculator to make the classification.
Keep time in minutes until totaling a shift where possible. Converting every interval independently to rounded decimal hours can introduce errors. The Time Card workflow is designed for start, end and break records.
How Overtime Affects an Hourly Paycheck
Overtime adds premium earnings when applicable. The tool does not automatically classify every hour above a threshold; you enter classified hours or import the Overtime Calculator’s gross result. Imported earnings are counted once.
Overtime does not have a separate federal tax rate merely because it is overtime. A larger check can increase withholding. Any qualified-overtime deduction is a separate eligibility calculation and is not an automatic exemption from payroll taxes.
Why Your Actual Hourly Paycheck May Differ
Actual paid hours, benefit taxability, local taxes, W-4 entries, year-to-date wages and special payroll methods can change the result. Annualizing a repeating week assumes 52 equivalent weeks, which can overstate earnings if some weeks are unpaid.
Use actual payroll records for a partial period. This tool does not replace a payroll system, decide overtime eligibility, or include every state payroll contribution.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate an hourly paycheck?
Multiply the hourly rate by paid regular hours, add verified overtime or other taxable wages, then subtract applicable withholding, payroll taxes and deductions to estimate take-home pay.
How do I calculate paycheck hours?
Add paid work time for the pay period and subtract unpaid breaks or unpaid time. If shifts cross midnight or overtime rules matter, use the Time Card mode in PayNumera's Overtime Calculator.
How do you calculate your hours for a paycheck?
Use the employer's pay-period records or time card, total paid minutes/hours, subtract unpaid breaks, and group the hours into the correct workweeks when overtime may apply.
How do I calculate gross pay for an hourly employee?
For regular hours, multiply hourly rate by paid regular hours. Add overtime, bonuses or other included earnings separately.
How is hourly take-home pay calculated?
After gross earnings are determined, estimate federal/state withholding, Social Security, Medicare and deductions. Divide final take-home pay by paid hours only if you want an effective net hourly amount.
How does overtime affect my hourly paycheck?
Overtime can increase gross pay at a premium rate when applicable. Calculate overtime with the Overtime Calculator, then pass the result into this tool for after-tax estimation.
Is overtime taxed differently from regular hourly pay?
Overtime does not have a separate federal income-tax rate simply because it is overtime. A larger paycheck can change withholding, and current qualified-overtime deductions are handled separately.
Why did my hourly paycheck change even though my hourly rate did not?
Hours worked, overtime, tax withholding, benefits, payroll-tax wage limits, local taxes and deductions can all change the final check.
Can I calculate a biweekly hourly paycheck?
Yes. Use the actual hours for the two-week pay period and ensure overtime is evaluated by workweek where required, rather than simply treating the entire biweekly period as one 80-hour threshold.
Is hourly pay before or after taxes?
An hourly wage is normally quoted as a gross rate before taxes and deductions.
How do I estimate my paycheck if I work different hours each week?
Enter the actual or expected hours for the pay period. If the weeks differ and overtime is possible, calculate each workweek correctly before combining the gross wages.
